Asean leaders assemble in KL today for key summit, related meetings

South-East Asian leaders have gathered in the Malaysian capital here on Monday (May 26) to deliberate on regional matters at the 46th Asean Summit and Related Summits.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who arrived at 8am at the KL Convention Centre (KLCC), was seen welcoming his foreign counterparts at a special podium located at the entrance.

Among leaders spotted were Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Indonesia President Prabowo Subianto, Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao, and Laos Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone.

Also spotted was Philippines Prime Minister Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Thailand Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Vietnam Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

At 9am, Anwar is scheduled to deliver his opening remarks at the 46th Asean Summit (Plenary), followed by a closed-door retreat session.  

At noon, Parliament Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul will chair the Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (Aipa) interface with Asean leaders.

Also on schedule is the Asean leaders’ Interface with Representatives of the Asean Business Advisory Council (Asean-BAC).

The highlight of the 46th Summit on Monday (May 26) would be the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on Asean 2045: Our Shared Future,  a strategic milestone that will shape the next phase of community building in Asean.

Asean Ministerial Meetings are taking place on Sunday (May 25) and it is expected to set the tone for the 46th Asean Summit and Related Summits scheduled for May 26-27.

Leaders in the region will meet during the 46th Asean Summit on May 26 and the summits with the Gulf Cooperation Council and China on May 27.
