COP30 event spotlight natural rubber as key climate solution

A high-level side event at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) held in Brazil has highlighted natural rubber’s role as a key enabler of sustainable development and climate resilience.

It described natural rubber not only as a critical raw material but also as a strategic climate solution with its potential to contribute meaningfully to global mitigation efforts and net-zero targets.

Titled “Promoting Smallholder Projects for Net-Zero and Beyond” the event was organised by the Association of Natural Rubber Producing Countries (ANRPC), supported by the International Rubber Research and Development Board (IRRDB), and co-organized by the American Forest Foundation (AFF).

Lekshmi Nair, ANRPC emphasized the role of smallholders in climate change mitigation and adaptation, and the need for the right support, tools, finance, and partnerships for attaining global net-zero goals.

Keynote speakers, Satya Tripathi, Secretary-General of the Global Alliance for a Sustainable Planet, highlighted the need for private finance to support public good and the importance of replicating successful projects and Nisar Marisi, Ministry of National Development Planning, Indonesia, pointed out the importance of enhancing productivity, strengthening compliance, and improving value chains efficiency for a sustainable transition in the natural rubber sector, aligning with global climate commitments.
