Malaysia seeks stronger economic ties with Europe amid US tariff threat

As the threat of United States reciprocal tariffs creates an uncertain future for Malaysia and the world, the government aims to strengthen ties with Europe, says Liew Chin Tong.

The Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said this includes building closer economic relationships with strong European economies, especially Italy.

"The current situation we are facing due to US President Donald Trump's tariffs is a once-in-a-generation challenge, which will be difficult to handle.

"Therefore, increasing economic cooperation between Malaysia and Italy, as well as between Asean and Europe, will be very important going forward," he said.

He made these remarks during the launch of Generali Insurance Malaysia Bhd’s new Malaysian headquarters at Menara Generali on Monday (April 28).

Liew added that he would have a closed-door meeting with Italian Deputy Minister of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Valentino Valentini, to discuss cooperation between the two countries.
