Tea export sees 33% surge in Bangladesh in a year
  • About one million kg of tea exported to 14 countries till May this year, says the state minister

  • The National Tea Award-2024 will be awarded on Tuesday

  • Some 102.92 million kg of tea produced in tea gardens in 2023


About one million kg of tea has been exported to 14 countries till May this year, which is 33% more than the previous year.


State Minister for Commerce Ahsanul Islam Titu came up with the information at a press conference at the Ministry of Commerce on Monday afternoon.


The state minister said that the National Tea Award-2024 will be awarded in 8 categories in recognition of special contribution to the tea industry on the occasion of National Tea Day at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital on Tuesday.


Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will attend the event as the chief guest.


This year's theme of Tea Day is “Smart Bangladesh determination, export-oriented tea industry”.


It was informed in the press conference that under the auspices of the Ministry of Commerce, the Bangladesh Tea Board will celebrate "National Tea Day" for the fourth time on Tuesday and give the "National Tea Award" for the second time.


There are currently 168 large tea gardens and about 8,000 small tea gardens in the country. As a result of the continuation of all the groundbreaking initiatives of Bangabandhu in the development of the tea industry and the implementation of various plans of the present government, the country's tea industry is advancing on the path of sustainable development, said the state minister.


Some 102.92 million kg of tea has been produced in the country's tea gardens in 2023, surpassing all previous production records in the history of the tea industry, he said.


Titu said that 1.04 million kg of tea has been exported to 13 countries in Europe, Asia and the Middle East in 2023, which is about 33% more than the previous year.


Besides, a 3% export incentive is being provided to encourage tea exports.


Meanwhile, tea exports are also increasing. Around one million kg of tea has been exported to 14 countries till May 2024.


The Ministry of Commerce and the Bangladesh Tea Board are working with everyone involved in the tea industry to increase the export of tea by participating in international fairs, increasing the promotion of domestic tea abroad, and making tea according to the demand of the international market.
