The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT is now the new Formula E safety car
Earlier this year, the new Porsche Taycan Turbo GT was revealed — and over the weekend, it has become the new Formula E safety car.
First presented in February this year, the new Porsche Taycan Turbo GT has officially assumed the role of safety car in the all-electric world championship. The Taycan Turbo GT follows the Turbo S back in 2019 — but what truly sets the new Taycan apart is its increased power with a greater range, as well as faster and more robust charges.
Since March, the Turbo GT has been at the top of the range — and displaying consistent circuit configuration, as proven by its record-breaking laps at the Nürburgring and Laguna Seca. An optional Weissach package allows it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 305 km/h. And of course, the Attack Mode: temporary boosts of up to 120 kW of extra power, based on the technology of the Porsche 99X Electric — which is also the previous world-championship-winning Formula E car).
For the first time ever, the electric world championship’s safety car is available in two versions: the first Taycan Turbo GT in the exclusive exterior colour Purple Sky Metallic, with the Weissach package and therefore without any rear seats; and the second in Shade Green Metallic without the added performance boost (four-seater).
“Sustainability and electrification are of great importance to Porsche,” says Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Porsche Motorsport, “which is reflected in our motorsport activities, including the deployment of the Taycan Turbo GT as a safety car. This is symbolic of the fact that we learn from motorsport for series applications — another reason why the Taycan has improved in almost every discipline recently.”
